Sometimes, I look back to the days when I had a three and a one year old, and I used to drive thirty minutes (thirty minutes!) to a Kindermusik class for the older one. It must have seemed incredibly important at the time, but in the bigger scheme of things, now I have to ask, “What did that three hundred dollars and sixty hours of driving really accomplish? Fast forward to my life now with six kids and a variety of enrichment activities, and I began to ponder the value of the activities that my kids take now: acting, Kung fu, violin, chess. And what of children who have no opportunities in poorer countries or in our own? Are my children better off for having taken violin and in what sense are they better off?
